After a coronavirus outbreak where only those wearing plastic visors were infected, the Swiss government has said plastic shields are inadequate protection and should only be worn in combination with a face mask.

Health officials in the canton of Graübunden studying a recent outbreak among staff at a hotel found a worrying trend - all of those who were infected wore plastic face shields, while those who avoided infection wore face masks.

Several employees of the hotel tested positive along with a guest.

Rudolf Leuthold, head of the cantonal health department in Graübunden, said the face shields were the common denominator in infections.

“It has been shown that only those employees who had plastic visors were infected. There was not a single infection among employees with a mask.”

Leuthold told Swiss news outlet 20 Minutes that a guest of the hotel was also infected: "We know that the guest was served by employees with plastic visors."

Government warns against plastic face shields

On Tuesday, the cantonal health authorities in Graübunden spoke out against plastic face shields.

Cantonal doctor Marina Jamnicki said not only are plastic face shields less effective than face masks, they may provide wearers with a false sense of security.

Researchers have discovered that extraterrestrial germs are more dangerous than terrestrial ones, highlighting a new alien risk in our relationship with space.

While the world keeps battling the Covid-19 pandemic, scientists from the Universities of Aberdeen and Exeter have discovered that our mammalian bodies wouldn’t stand a chance against germs in outer space.

The paper details how the immune system of mammals would struggle to fight germs from other planets, as they are fundamentally different to what is found on Earth.

This is because the extraterrestrial germs’ amino acids – the building blocks to all life – could, and probably would, be totally different to those of creatures here on our own planet.

During the wave of COVID-19 patients that flooded Dutch hospitals in the first half of 2020, two young brothers became seriously ill with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and had to be mechanically ventilated in the ICU. One of them died from the consequences of the infection, the other recovered. The severe course of disease in otherwise healthy young brothers was a relatively rare occurrence, especially because the virus mainly affects the elderly. This observation triggered the curiosity of an attentive physician from the MUMC+ department of clinical genetics. She contacted her colleagues in Nijmegen who then investigated why these two young brothers were so severely affected.

Genetic factors

"In such a case, you immediately wonder whether genetic factors could play a role," says geneticist Alexander Hoischen. "Getting sick from an infection is always an interplay between—in this case—the virus and the human immune system. It may be a mere coincidence that two brothers from the same family become so severely ill. But it is also possible that an inborn error of the immune system has played an important role. We investigated this possibility, together with our multidisciplinary team at Radboudumc."
...
Gene identification

That search quickly revealed mutations in the gene encoding for the Toll-like receptor 7, TLR7 for short. There are multiple TLR-genes, which belong to a family of receptors with an important role in the recognition of pathogens (such as bacteria and viruses) and the activation of the immune system. Hoischen: "A few letters were missing in the genetic code of the TLR7 gene. As a result, the code cannot be read properly and hardly any TLR7 protein is produced. TLR7 function has so far never been associated with an inborn error of immunity. But unexpectedly we now have an indication that TLR7 is essential for protection from this coronavirus. So it seems that the virus can replicate undisturbed because the immune system does not get a message that the virus has invaded. Because TLR7, which must identify the intruder and subsequently activate the defense, is hardly present. That could be the reason for the severity of the disease in these brothers."

Then, quite unexpectedly, the doctors and researchers at Radboudumc come across another pair of brothers who have fallen seriously ill with COVID-19. Again, they are both under 35 years of age. Both of them were also in the ICU for mechanical ventilation. "Then the question of the role of genetics became even more obvious." says Hoischen. "We also investigated the genetic code of these two brothers, again via the 'rapid-clinical exome' method. This time we saw no deletion, no loss of letters, but a single spelling mistake of one DNA-letter of the TRL7 gene. The effect on the gene is the same, however, because these brothers also do not make sufficient functional TLR7 protein. Suddenly we had four young people with a defect in the same gene, all of whom had fallen seriously ill from the SARS-CoV-2 virus."

Essential role in the defense

Van der Made and colleagues have investigated the consequences of improper functioning of the TLR7 receptor. "Once activated, TLR7 triggers the production of so-called interferons, signaling proteins that are essential in the defense against virus infections," says van der Made. "This immune response is perhaps all the more important in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, because we know from the literature that the virus has tricks to reduce the production of interferons by immune cells. When we mimic an infection with the coronavirus, we see that immune cells of the patients without properly functioning TLR7 hardly respond, and that minimal amounts of interferons are produced. These tests make it clear that the virus appears to have free rein in people without properly functioning TLR7 because it [the virus] is not recognized by the immune system."

Consequences

"Due to the serious illness of four brothers in two families, so serious that it cost one of the young men his life, we have discovered this condition," says Hoischen. "It seems to be a very specific abnormality, an immunodeficiency, which is mainly related to this coronavirus. None of the four men have previously suffered from immune-related diseases. It is the first time that we can connect a clinical phenomenon so strongly with TLR7."

"This discovery not only provides us with more insight into the fundamental workings of the immune system, but it may also have important consequences for the treatment of severely ill COVID-19 patients," says Frank van de Veerdonk, immunologist and infectiologist. "The substance interferon can be given as a therapy. It is currently being investigated whether administering interferon in COVID-19 can indeed help."

These cases prove the genuine existence of UFOs, and they attest to the fact that these sightings in the sky can no longer be disclaimed, although the military, government offices and secret services officials continue to vehemently attempt to do so. They take this stance because they actually have in their possession crashed and safeguarded UFOs as well as their, usually, dead crew members. Undeniably, events are occurring in the sky and flying objects of unknown origin are appearing that cannot be traced back to terrestrial, Earth-human machinations and terrestrial flying devices. Not all of these events can be explained with traditional, terrestrial approaches, and the crashed, safe-guarded UFOs with their dead crew members prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that they are of alien origin. The Americans in particular could prove this, for they have been able to stash away several crashed UFOs and their dead, extraterrestrial crew members, and even now they are busily attempting to copy UFOs - with fairly passable success, as their UFO aerobatics, respectively their test flights in the Nevada desert around Area 51 demonstrate.
...
Particularly in modern times, the UFO phenomenon has made its way to an important position in the public eye, and without a doubt it has become one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 20th century. Though the UFOs may often be ridiculed or simply ignored, this criticism will change over time. One of the reasons behind the snickering and a tendency to ignore UFO sightings, their crashing, safeguarding and the retrieval of dead or semi-dead crew members, is the official military/secret service denial of their existence. Another reason is the ridicule of the UFO phenomenon by government agencies, the military, secret services, radio and television stations, newspapers and others who want to prevent ordinary citizens from hearing the truth and, instead, want to make them feel safe in the comfort of their ignorance. Yet by and large, it is primarily the sectarian would-be UFO contactees who, through their absurdities and inanities, paint the entire gamut of this UFO phenomenon with the glittering aspect of absurdity. As a result, their attempts are then virtually ripped to shreds in mid-air by skeptical, critical, all-devouring and asinine type of journalism. The entire phenomenon is taken out of its original context and slurred by the popular press, etc., on the premise that a lie is more impressive than the truth, and that this type of mud-slinging journalism is financially more rewarding than sound, truthful and correct reporting, which was journalism's original slogan in earlier days but has since become a very rare virtue.

Many things have happened in the field of ufology since 1975. Not only are UFO sightings occurring more frequently and resulting in actual "UFO waves", but volumes of previously classified and top secret UFO files have also been released that provide authentic and clear findings surrounding UFOs, their sightings, crashes and other items. These are indeed very impressive documents, although a vast amount of text is blackened out and continues to remain undisclosed. These secret documents also clearly reveal that various governments throughout the world, especially the major powers, are extremely anxious whenever UFOs appear, and for a long time they have reacted accordingly. Obviously these governments, their secret and military services and others, are not indifferent to the intruders from space in their flying disks, globes, cigars and triangular devices to mention only a few. Such agencies look upon the aliens as objects of anxiety, if not fear, which may be triggered by the fact that they have been able to seize crashed UFOs and their dead or semi-dead crew members. They have come to conclude therefore that extraterrestrials far surpass terrestrial capabilities in every way.

Ptaah
58. That is correct, but there not only the MUFON is to blame for the whole hysteria, but also the many religious sects as well as in particular the government itself, which actually conceals and keeps under lock and key much important evidence for the existence of extraterrestrial life and their appearance on Earth as well as forbids by laws the contact with extraterrestrial life-forms.
59. Another very objectionable factor is the fact that in the USA military aircraft are built and tested in an extremely secret form, of which many outsiders have knowledge and even evidence, because they could observe the aircraft at all times of day and night and even film and photograph them.

Billy
And these are aircraft that have non-aviation forms and have engines and flight characteristics that are not characteristic of any conventional aircraft. But why are you talking about it now? We weren't allowed to do that until now.

Ptaah
60. This secrecy is also taken away from us with our withdrawal.
61. So now I may also say that various so-called UFO observations, which have been made in many countries of Earth during the last four decades, lead back in multiple forms also to such aircraft of earthly origin, which however do not only prosecute to America, but also to other countries of Earth.
62. The actual reason that we are allowed to talk about this in our withdrawal is that all these things have been an open secret in certain circles for a long time and therefore we do not release anything of knowledge that would still have to be regarded as a secret, as is the case, for example, with actual government and military secrets, in which we are not allowed to interfere or disclose them.
63. What we are doing here is simply a confirmation for certain things and incidents that can no longer be regarded as real secrets.

Billy
In various countries on Earth, flying apparatuses are being developed which, due to their construction method which is different from that based on airplanes, appear foreign and extraterrestrial, and indeed with quite good success. The forms of flying apparatuses range from the beamship forms that you know of, to triangular forms etc. etc. And the fact that these flying apparatuses are then regarded by observers as UFOs i.e. as spaceships or simply as extraterrestrial flying objects, is indeed probably only natural; not least also because they are noiseless or almost noiseless and have flight characteristics which are foreign to the flight techniques known on Earth and contradict them. That is what you have explained in repetition. Better safe than sorry.

Ptaah
64. That's right.

No Longer in Shadows, Pentagon’s U.F.O. Unit Will Make Some Findings Public

For over a decade, the program, now tucked inside the Office of Naval Intelligence, has discussed mysterious events in classified briefings.

Despite Pentagon statements that it disbanded a once-covert program to investigate unidentified flying objects, the effort remains underway — renamed and tucked inside the Office of Naval Intelligence, where officials continue to study mystifying encounters between military pilots and unidentified aerial vehicles.

Pentagon officials will not discuss the program, which is not classified but deals with classified matters. Yet it appeared last month in a Senate committee report outlining spending on the nation’s intelligence agencies for the coming year. The report said the program, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force, was “to standardize collection and reporting” on sightings of unexplained aerial vehicles, and was to report at least some of its findings to the public within 180 days after passage of the intelligence authorization act.

While retired officials involved with the effort — including Harry Reid, the former Senate majority leader — hope the program will seek evidence of vehicles from other worlds, its main focus is on discovering whether another nation, especially any potential adversary, is using breakout aviation technology that could threaten the United States.
Senator Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who is the acting chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told a CBS affiliate in Miami this month that he was primarily concerned about reports of unidentified aircraft over American military bases — and that it was in the government’s interest to find out who was responsible.

He expressed concerns that China or Russia or some other adversary had made “some technological leap” that “allows them to conduct this sort of activity.”

Mr. Rubio said some of the unidentified aerial vehicles over U.S. bases possibly exhibited technologies not in the American arsenal. But he also noted: “Maybe there is a completely, sort of, boring explanation for it. But we need to find out.”

...
Mr. Reid, the former Democratic senator from Nevada who pushed for funding the earlier U.F.O. program when he was the majority leader, said he believed that crashes of objects of unknown origin may have occurred and that retrieved materials should be studied.

“After looking into this, I came to the conclusion that there were reports — some were substantive, some not so substantive — that there were actual materials that the government and the private sector had in their possession,” Mr. Reid said in an interview.

...
Eric W. Davis, an astrophysicist who worked as a subcontractor and then a consultant for the Pentagon U.F.O. program since 2007, said that, in some cases, examination of the materials had so far failed to determine their source and led him to conclude, “We couldn’t make it ourselves.”

The constraints on discussing classified programs — and the ambiguity of information cited in unclassified slides from the briefings — have put officials who have studied U.F.O.s in the position of stating their views without presenting any hard evidence.

Mr. Davis, who now works for Aerospace Corporation, a defense contractor, said he gave a classified briefing to a Defense Department agency as recently as March about retrievals from “off-world vehicles not made on this earth.”

Mr. Davis said he also gave classified briefings on retrievals of unexplained objects to staff members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Oct. 21, 2019, and to staff members of the Senate Intelligence Committee two days later.

Two new studies from Germany paint a sobering picture of the toll that Covid-19 takes on the heart, raising the specter of long-term damage after people recover, even if their illness was not severe enough to require hospitalization.

One study examined the cardiac MRIs of 100 people who had recovered from Covid-19 and compared them to heart images from 100 people who were similar but not infected with the virus. Their average age was 49 and two-thirds of the patients had recovered at home. More than two months later, infected patients were more likely to have troubling cardiac signs than people in the control group: 78 patients showed structural changes to their hearts, 76 had evidence of a biomarker signaling cardiac injury typically found after a heart attack, and 60 had signs of inflammation.

These were relatively young, healthy patients who fell ill in the spring, Valentina Puntmann, who led the MRI study, pointed out in an interview. Many of them had just returned from ski vacations. None of them thought they had anything wrong with their hearts.

“The fact that 78% of ‘recovered’ [patients] had evidence of ongoing heart involvement means that the heart is involved in a majority of patients, even if Covid-19 illness does not scream out with the classical heart symptoms, such as anginal chest pain,” she told STAT. She is a cardiologist at University Hospital Frankfurt. “In my view, the relatively clear onset of Covid-19 illness provides an opportunity to take proactive action and to look for heart involvement early.”

The other study, which analyzed autopsy results from 39 people who died early in the pandemic and whose average age was 85, found high levels of the virus in the hearts of 24 patients.

“We see signs of viral replication in those that are heavily infected,” Dirk Westermann, a cardiologist at the University Heart and Vascular Centre in Hamburg, said in an interview. “We don’t know the long-term consequences of the changes in gene expression yet. I know from other diseases that it’s obviously not good to have that increased level of inflammation.”

Taken together, the two studies, published Monday in JAMA Cardiology, suggest that in many patients, Covid-19 could presage heart failure, a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart’s ability to pump blood throughout the body declines. It is too soon to say if the damage in patients recovering from Covid-19 is transient or permanent, but cardiologists are worried.

“These are two studies that both suggest that being infected with Covid-19 carries a high likelihood of having some involvement of the heart. If not answering questions, [they] prompt important questions about what the cardiac aftermath is,” said Matthew Tomey, a cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Health System in New York. He was not involved in either study.

“The question now is how long these changes persist,” he added. “Are these going to become chronic effects upon the heart or are these — we hope —  temporary effects on cardiac function that will gradually improve over time?”

Since the pandemic began, people with underlying cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, or heart failure have been known to be at higher risk for infection and death. The connection between Covid-19 and blood clots emerged later, after doctors began connecting the pulmonary aneurysms, strokes, and heart attacks they were seeing to the virus.

Cardiac problems in recovering patients could belong to a pattern of lingering symptoms.
Tomey sees signs of weakness in patients who had Covid-19 in March or April, when the disease was surging in New York.

“Patients come to my office saying, ‘Hey, I’m a 31-year-old who used to run and be completely unlimited in my exercise, and now I get palpitations walking across the street. Or I get out of breath climbing up to my second-floor apartment,’” he said. “Individuals are exquisitely tuned in to their own capacity for exercise, so I take that very seriously. Our challenge is to understand the why.”

Marc Pfeffer, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, called both the autopsy and MRI studies a sobering warning. He was not involved in either. He’s concerned about relatively young people losing their cardiac health reserves, which typically decrease with age and can set the stage for heart failure.

“We knew that this virus, SARS-CoV-2, doesn’t spare the heart,” he said. “We’re going to get a lot of people through the acute phase [but] I think there’s going to be a long-term price to pay.”

In an editorial about the two studies, Clyde Yancy, a cardiologist at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Gregg Fonarow, a cardiologist at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine, pushed for more research into the problem.

“If this high rate of risk is confirmed, … then the crisis of COVID-19 will not abate but will instead shift to a new de novo incidence of heart failure and other chronic cardiovascular complications,” they wrote. “We are inclined to raise a new and very evident concern that cardiomyopathy and heart failure related to Covid-19 may potentially evolve as the natural history of this infection becomes clearer.”
